FPAC 2008 Recommendations

September 5, 2008 · Posted in Uncategorized

FPAC is this weekend (September 6 and 7) and there’s quite a bit to see so here are some of the Pinoylife recommendations (i.e. people I know that are performing). I apologize that I wasn’t able to put the times and stages where each act would be performing but you can thank the FPAC web team for not doing proper QA on their site.

P.I.C.
All the way from New York comes this band with a style than can best be described as a blend of hip-hop, funk, soul, and ska. Years ago, they were the featured band on Comedy Central’s show Premium Blend. Now they are gonna bring their bad ass brand of music to the FPAC stage for the very first time. And did I mention they have a horn section? HORN SECTIONS KICK ASS!

If there’s one band you need to check out this year, it’s P.I.C.

The Jack Lords
What happens when you get a few members of P.I.C. and throw in some ukeleles? You get The Jack Lords. I’ve heard a lot about them and I’m looking forward to seeing them on Sunday.

Vince Reyes
Vince drinks beers with people that write and contribute for Pinoylife.com. He’s a great guitarist, possibly one of the best I’ve seen.  Go to church early so you can catch Vince’s set at 11am this Sunday on the Main Stage.

Fighting Cocks
I have no idea who these people are but the mere fact they called themselves Fighting Cocks is good enough for me to go watch them.

Kiwi
I’ve known this guy since high school during his pre-Kiwi area. It’s been great to see him evolve into a strong, lyrical hip-hop artist and yes, he reads this site.

Happy Slip (aka Christine Gambito)
It’s no secret that I’m not the biggest Happy Slip fan on the planet but she’s going to make her live comedy debut at FPAC. Hopefully she’ll be funny and she should have no problems with a large fan base that will be there to see her. But if she sucks, you can at least witness the train wreck of a comedian bombing on a live stage at the biggest Filipino outdoor festival in Southern California as it happens. Good luck Christine!

Bambu
He’s back on the Main Stage this year with his third album “Exact Change”. The always controversial and politically charged hip-hop artist never fails to deliver the goods at FPAC.

Joe Bataan
Joe’s the freaking headliner! ‘Nuff said.

The FPAC Tribute to the Pinoy DJ
Freakin’ awesome and about gawdam time. DJ Icy Ice’s record store Stacks Vinyl is sponsoring this event that will pay tribute to four pioneers in the art of DJing and turntablism:

DJ Kuttin’ Kandi – Fifth Platoon and Anomalies
DJ Babu – Dialated Peoples and the Beat Junkies
DJ Rhettmatic – The Visionaries and the Beat Junkies
Nasty Nes – First Pinoy to host a Hip Hop Radio show on the west coast and was a co-founder of Nastymix records with Sir-Mix-A-Lot.

These are four very deserving DJs and hope that this honor can keep going on as there is a LONG list of Pinoy DJs worth recognizing.

Show and Prove Street Dance Showcase
If you want to see why there are so many Pinoys on MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew, there are 5 dance crews that will put on a clinic at FPAC. And to the Kaba Modern folks, please bring the Pinoy squad for FPAC ‘cause a lot of us were kinda ticked that there wasn’t one Pinoy representing you guys on ABDC especially since your group took its name from the word kababayan.

Projekt New Speak
Once again, we have two people in Projekt New Speak that drink beers with Pinoylife writers and contributors. Make sure you say hi to Kris Clemente and Earl “Stop it with the Super Hawaiian Shit” Baylon.

Rondalla Club LA
There’s a guy named Patrick Tanega that is part of this cultural music group. I normally go watch them and just yell for Patrick as he was the bass player for the legendary band, Zoo Hero. Unfortunately, Patrick lost a bet during the NBA finals which resulted with him having to be a vegan until the beginning of the 2008-2009 NBA season. You gotta admire his love for the Los Angeles Lakers ‘cause I’d never take that bet in a million years.

Other cool stuff:
The Balut Eating Contest
The Polvoron Whistling Contest
Kapisanang Mandirigma Martial Arts Demonstration

There is a whole lot more at the festival that I just couldn’t mention. I’m looking forward to seeing some of the new talent in the Pinoy community.  If anything, just walk around and if you hear something you like at one of the stages, go and check out the talent.  And if your name is KoRN, you’ll still be happy to know that there will be cool breezes and hot single chicks at FPAC (but I don’t think there will be any porn stars… at least none are advertised, sorry KoRN).

To Horny Pinoy, I don’t think Elita Loresca is going to be at FPAC or Pinoyfest. Sorry about that as well but Maria Quiban normally shows up at FPAC so hopefully you’re into MILFs.

For all you single ladies still looking for that man, go to FPAC and don’t be afraid to approach some of the male artists mentioned above because some of those guys are hurtin’ for some good lovin’.

There’s a slight chance I’ll be emceeing a stage on Sunday.  See you at the festival (I meant FPAC, not the other one).

As a member of Kababayan at UCI, I’ve heard a lot of people making unfair jabs (just like the one in this segment) at Kaba Modern for their lack of Filipino representation on ABDC.

This isn’t the time or the place to address those concerns, so to keep it simple, there’s more to it than a bunch of Chinese and Korean kids trying to downplay their team’s history in order to make it big on TV.

Other than that, I agree that this FPAC will be amazing and all these acts are worth paying the money to see.

there’s gonna be this dude at 1pm on Saturday who was just added to the line up this week cuz some talent scout or someone saw him at an open mic (and maybe other people cancelled)…he’s gonna play the guitar and sing songs. he likes to say: “you know me! off-beat and off-key!”.

(he isn’t used to playing the guitar in front of so many people, he usually just plays with himself)

There’s gonna be a Starcraft demo at 1pm at FPAC on Saturday?

Just watch out for the Zergling rush.

Flipchild: I think I love you!

Thanks for the news, Moonie. Damn. Though I do appreciate a good MILF every now and then (and this past week has definitely thrust MILFs into the spotlight), I’ve seen Maria Quiban before and though she’s delish, she doesn’t quite make me live up to my namesake anymore. Elita, on the other hand, sends me into instant tigas mode. Oh yeah.
