Pia Quijada pleads Not Guilty for stealing from Manny Pacquiao

February 2, 2009 · Posted in General, sports · 12 Comments

Various news outlets are reporting on the story of Pia Quijada who has recently pled “not guilty” for siphoning more than $89,000 from Manny Pacquiao.  The link between the woman and the boxer is Pia’s husband (maybe ex-husband now) Joseph Jose, Manny Pacquiao’s driver.

According to the L.A. Daily News and the Manila Standard Today, Manny asked for Joseph Jose’s help in setting up a bank account in the United States.  It is alleged that Pia used that knowledge to forge at least 32 checks to access the money from Manny’s bank account.

Here’s a photo of the couple (Thanks Manila Standard for putting this online)

It is innocent until proven guilty so I cannot say whether or not Pia Quijada actually did the crime nor do I have any inside knowledge of whether or not Joseph Jose was aware of these actions.

The crack staff here at Pinoylife.com tried to find anything online about Pia Quijada and a Facebook link did come up but it led to a cancelled Facebook page.  However, a hacker friend did manage to dig up a “25 Random Things About Me” Facebook post written suspiciously by someone named Pia Q.  Here’s what it read:

Pacquiao imitation knockoffs are now available

Pinoylifer Dr. Phil sent me a link off an MMA forum that showed pictures of a guy at a club posing with someone who he thought was Manny Pacquiao. Check them out:

I think it’s pretty funny that these folks fell for the fake Pacquiao at the club without even noticing that he didn’t have any members of his entourage with him.  Double funny if any of those girls went home with him that night! So when you’re out at the club and you think you see Manny Pacquiao, make sure to do a double take.

As a challenge to all of you, I need some suggestions as to what to call the fake Manny.  Comment up!

A Tale of Two Manny After Parties

December 17, 2008 · Posted in Events, General, sports · 13 Comments

December 6, 2008 will go down in history as the night Manny Pacquiao became a superstar. It’s also the night where two groups threw Manny Pacquiao after parties in Las Vegas.  One was the official one.  One wasn’t.

Witnessing History and Living in the Moment

December 7, 2008 · Posted in General, Photos, sports · 17 Comments

Where were you the night Manny Pacquiao beat Oscar De La Hoya?

Last night’s event will be ingrained in the memories of Filipinos all over the planet.  A lucky few will proudly say that they were at the fight in Las Vegas to witness history happen.  Most will tell a tale of gathering at a house loaded with food, friends, and family as they cheered on their hero on a television screen.

In Los Angeles, a select group of community members were invited to watch the fight at the Montalban Theater (yes, it’s named after the man who played KHAN!).  The fight screening was sponsored by Nike in conjunction with community organization Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA) and was billed as the Manny Pacquiao fan headquarters.

That’s where I was and this is the story of that evening.

MANNY DOMINATES! (and Oscar gets PWN3D!)

I’m STILL in shock.  The common feeling by a lot of fight fans leading up to Saturday’s “Dream Match” between Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao was that their hearts were with Manny but they didn’t know if he could overcome the size and power of Oscar De La Hoya.

Manny not only won the fight, he dominated Oscar De La Hoya into an 8 round TKO.  A FREAKIN’ TKO!

The torch has officially been passed. The new king of the ring is a Filipino boxer named Manny Pacquiao.

Livin’ Large with the Pacman – Thoughts on Episode 2 of HBO’s Pacquiao – De La Hoya 24/7

November 24, 2008 · Posted in Events, General, Reviews, sports · 3 Comments

The second installment of the Pacquiao – De La Hoya 24/7 series was, once again, a solid piece of documentary work by the HBO Sports crew.  The show depicted Pacquiao as a loving husband as he spent some alone time with his wife Jinkee listening to the pulses of their unborn child using an electronic device pressed against Jinkee’s very pregnant belly. This was a much needed improvement from the last episode’s display of karaoke coldness from Manny.

Thoughts on HBO’s 24/7 De La Hoya – Pacquiao | Episode 1

November 18, 2008 · Posted in General, sports · 17 Comments

We are just weeks away from witnessing the biggest fight in Filipino sports history.  I never thought that I would see the day when the world’s best pound-for-pound boxer would be a Pinoy.  I’m sure boxing historian Corky Pasquil is crapping bricks of joy right now seeing that we are living in a new great era of Philippine boxing.

HBO knows they are sitting on a goldmine with this fight so they are going to milk it for all the pay-per-view dollars that they can get.  That’s why they are dedicating four episodes of their outstanding documentary series 24/7 to the build up of this historic fight.  For those unfamiliar with HBO’s boxing marketing methods, for each major boxing fight, HBO sends film crews to document the lives of the two boxers headlining an upcoming bout to give viewers an inside look at what the fighters go through to prepare for the big event.  24/7 shows people how the fighters train, how they spend their down time, their family life, who their trainers and cornermen are, and any other fun information they can dig up.

The cable network aired the first of four episodes of the 24/7 De La Hoya – Pacquio series over the weekend and I was able to see what the cameras captured as they followed our beloved sports hero Manny Pacquiao.  It made for interesting television because I always am intrigued as to how a show will depict the Philippines and the Filipino people.  I was also interested to see how Manny and his crew would come off on camera.

Well, I saw the show and I have a few thoughts and recommendations towards Manny, his crew, his wife, and his fans.
