Super Cr3w Wins ABDC and Our Wang is Gold!

August 22, 2008 · Posted in Uncategorized · 2 Comments

For the 2nd year in a row, a dance group comprised mostly of Filipino Americans wins the title of Americas Best Dance Crew on MTV.

I’m sure most of you were watching and I heard about the Philippine flag and the Pinoy themed warm up gear. That’s f’n awesome. Unfortunately, I was having pizza and watching the Olympics but I’ll catch the replays on MTV when the Olympics are over.

Congrats to Super Cr3w and way to win one for Las Vegas… or Southern California… oh wait, you guys said Las Vegas.

Speaking of the Olympics, the Philippines got a gold medal! Sort of.

Once again, a Filipino athlete got a gold medal in an Olympic exhibition sport.  This year, the sport was Wushu and Filipino Willy Wang (I swear that’s his name) was the gold medal winner.  He truly was the cock of the walk in Wushu as he shafted all other competitors in his demonstration of skill and dexterity with his bare fists.  Wang’s ballsy performance is reminiscent of Arianne Cerdenas gold medal in women’s bowling in 1988, which also was an exhibition sport.

Here are the links for the Willy Wang story:

Ok I’m all out of dick jokes.  Wait, I got one more.

Penis. (That cheesy enough for you Chafa Khan?)

A Gold Medal Strategy for the Philippines

August 15, 2008 · Posted in Uncategorized · 15 Comments

Olympic fever has struck and I’m all in.  The swimming races, the basketball games, and even the badminton mixed doubles are things I find myself mesmerized by… in hi-def of course.  I’m cheering for Phelps, Coughlin, Kobe, and anyone representing the good ‘ol U.S. of A.

I’m also pulling for Team Philippines… all 15 of them.  The Philippines is competing in archery, shooting, taekwondo, swimming, boxing, long jump and diving.  The Philippine government even put up $220,000 for the first athlete to win a gold medal for the Philippines. (And no, the 1988 gold medal in women’s bowling doesn’t count ‘cause it was an exhibition sport.)  The money is a great incentive but I’m not sure if it is enough for a crispy pata eater to bring the gold back to the archipelago.

The Olympics Update for 8/12/08 – Go Natalie!

August 12, 2008 · Posted in Uncategorized · 12 Comments

Natalie CoughlinTeam USA is off to a great start at the Beijing games.  There’s been so much attention to Michael Phelps in his quest to make Olympic swimming history that other milestones are being glossed over by the media.  Being that this is a Pinoy pop-culture site, I need to show some love to Team USA swimmer Natalie Coughlin.  Natalie got the gold medal for the 100m backstroke and became the first woman in Olympic history to win the gold in this event in consecutive Olympic games.  And if you weren’t sure, Natalie is part Pinay as her lola is Zenaida Bohn from Meycauayan, Bulacan.

In more news, the Philippine government along with some other private groups have put up 9.5 million pesos as a bounty for an athlete to bring home the first gold medal to the Philippines.  That roughly makes out to be about $220,000.  If nobody wins that, they should give Natalie $55,000 just because her lola is from Bulacan.

More updates coming soon. GO TEAM USA!

The Asian Journal Actually Covered Something Cool!

August 5, 2008 · Posted in Uncategorized · 3 Comments

I think hell just dropped a few degrees because the Asian Journal actually did a decent piece on the Pinoys and Pinays that are competing in MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew.

Much props to Asian Journal writer Joseph Pimentel for the article.  Now if they could just do something about that wack ass name.  Anyway, check out the link:

Tips on Meeting Guys for Single Pinays Over 30

July 27, 2008 · Posted in Uncategorized · 151 Comments

I write this with a minor hangover so excuse me if I go astray.

There’s a slight lull in blog worthy Pinoy Pop-Culture items. When that happens, I start thinking about other things to write about and there was a topic that came up in a conversation I had a few weeks ago with a friend of mine. This friend is a Pinay who is single and in her 30s. She was showing a little bitterness towards her situation and I don’t blame her. This woman is pretty, out going, and fun to be with but for whatever reason, she hasn’t had much success finding Mr. Right.

The conversation got me thinking about what I could do to help other single Pinays in their 30s to find single men. It’s a little easier when you are in your 20s because you’re supposed to be out clubbing or hanging out at the cool night spots. Once you hit 30 and you go to those clubs, you find yourself being one of the old folks at the young club. And let’s not even talk about the eventual betrayal our bodies do to us when the metabolism goes to shit and eating a small piece of cake takes you one step closer from being a young, urban and hip Filipino to the over the hill tito or tita that you remember seeing when you were a kid.

The purpose of this site isn’t to facilitate any matchmaking for single folks. And if you are in your 20s, you’re in your freakin’ prime so you better start getting while the getting is good. But there are those of us that are passed the 30 mark and still not hooked up. I’m all about trying to give folks information to give them a different perspective.

Single ladies over 30, this one is for you.

July 27, 2008 · Posted in Uncategorized · 4 Comments

Robbie Lawler with the EliteXC Middleweight Title BeltFor all you MMA fans out there, Robbie Lawler defeated Scott Smith with a TKO in the 2nd round to retain the EliteXC Middleweight title.  The fight took place on Saturday, July 26 in Stockton, CA and was aired in a prime time national broadcast on CBS.  Pretty cool that a bi-racial Pinoy was in the main event for EliteXC’s second prime time network show.  And he won by delivering some hard knees to the body and head of Smith.  Props to both Smith and Lawler for a hard fought main event.

Making Meaning out of M7 Magazine

July 22, 2008 · Posted in Uncategorized · 77 Comments

M7 Magazine - Issue 2Have you heard of “M7 Magazine”?  I had never heard of it until someone showed me a copy of the 2nd issue featuring Apl.De.Ap of the Black Eyed Peas on the cover.  I’m staring at it as it sits here next to my laptop while I type this.

Whenever a new Filipino American print publication comes out, I have mixed feelings.  On one hand, it’s great to see people trying to put out a publication that’s geared towards the Filipino American lifestyle.  On the other hand, these publications always seem to get things wrong and put out a product that I just cannot relate to.

“Flip Magazine” came out in the 1990s only to be hampered with the fact that some of their target audience didn’t identify themselves as “Flips.”  It probably didn’t help that one of the people behind Flip Magazine owed money to some folks which isn’t good when you’re trying to cover a magazine’s operating expenses.

Then there were the pan-Asian American publications like “Yolk Magazine” and “A Magazine” that are both no longer in existence, most likely due to their inability to sustain profit. And both magazines had national corporate advertisers!

Recently, “DP Magazine” came onto the scene and had comedian Jo Koy on one of their covers.  If you’re wondering, DP stands for Discovering Pinoys and not Director of Photography or Double Penetration.   I wish I could tell you who is on their latest issue but when I went to their official website www.discoveringpinoys.com, I got a page that said “This Account Has Been Suspended”.  I guess we can add one more tombstone to the Pinoy publication graveyard.

Which brings us to the latest entry in the Filipino American start-up magazine saga – M7 Magazine.  I’ve had a chance to scope out the latest issue and…

Imagine a World Without Filipinos – Pinoylife Redux

July 15, 2008 · Posted in Uncategorized · 15 Comments

I swear, sometimes gifts just fall from the internet heavens.

Joel, the Pinoylife admin, got an email forward containing an article titled “Imagine a World Without Filipinos”. It was published in Saudi Arabian news outlet Al-Watan written by Abdullah Al-Maghlooth. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s a quick read:

Click the image to read the original article

Imagine a World Without Filipinos

The gist of the article is generally positive so props to Abdullah for the kind words. The title does make you think. What would it be like if we got rid of all the Filipinos on the planet? I’m sure there are some racist cocksuckers that would have a month long celebration but this is a hypothetical scenario that will never happen so don’t start making your parade floats just yet. Abdullah Al-Maghlooth pointed out some obvious things such as the negative impact on available nurses, manual labor, nannies, maids, and most importantly how eliminating Filipinos would decrease of the amount of seamen in the world. (Damn right!)

But there are other side effects that Al-Maghlooth didn’t cover. I now present to you my version of the article, “Imagine a World Without Filipinos”.
